A Little Marketing Humor...

I ran across a joke today. It's funny because it's a pretty good illustration of marketing methods.... but put into a different setting.

It goes like this:

You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and say, "I am very rich. Marry me!" That's Direct Marketing.

You're at a party with a bunch of friends and see a gorgeous girl. One of your friends goes up to her and pointing at you says, "He's very rich. Marry him." That's Advertising.

You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and get her telephone number. The next day you call and say, "Hi, I'm very rich. Marry me." That's Telemarketing.

You're at a party and see a gorgeous girl. You get up and straighten your tie, you walk up to her and pour her a drink. You open the door for her, pick up her bag after she drops it, offer her a ride, and then say, "By the way, I'm very rich. Will you marry me?" That's Public Relations.

You're at a party and see a gorgeous girl. She walks up to you and says, "You are very rich." That's Brand Recognition.

You see a gorgeous girl at a party. You go up to her and say, "I'm rich. Marry me." She gives you a nice hard slap on your face. That's Customer Feedback !!!!!

Are you chuckling yet?

Actually, in real life, none of these methods are very effective. Great marketing is more like this: You meet the girl and she enjoys talking with you. You get her phone number and ask to see her again. You wine her and dine her, over and over.

You get to know her. You find out what she wants and needs in life. In short, you develop a relationship before you ask her to marry you! And maybe she'll actually say "Yes!" That's Relationship Marketing!

That's the only type of marketing that appeals to Tom and me..... and it is the only type that really works. Too many "marketers" are looking for quick results, but don't take the time to develop a relationship with their prospects. You have to care about filling people's needs. When you do that, the success will follow.

Have a great day!

Get Your Business Questions Answered

Today ... as usual ... my Internet journey took some unexpected turns. Seems I often start in one direction, and wind up somewhere else entirely. Thankfully, I didn't get sidetracked down any dead-end roads this time. I'm still headed in the right direction.

Tom was still asleep when I discovered a neat video about a viral marketing technique, and events developed from there. The excellent video was by James Grandstaff, in Berkley, Michigan. In it, he showed how you can make money by giving away his series of videos.

One thing led to another. Before you know it, I had signed up for free access to the Ask James Podcasts.

Of course, I don't have an iPod. But I won't need one. You see, James Grandstaff is an experienced Internet Marketer who answers people's marketing questions in online broadcasts. Downloading them for your iPod is optional.

As part of the sign-up process, I was invited to submit my most pressing marketing question. So, I told James about how I understand the marketing "steps" - get subscribers by offering a free product, etc. - but where I get stuck is the actual mechanics of how to set up this process.

How do you set up a web page to give away a downloadable product?

Even more complex, How do you set up a system of web pages that takes an order, collects the money, and then delivers the product?

So, we'll see if my question gets answered on a future Podcast or not. Meanwhile, I'll be checking out some of the already recorded Podcasts with answers to other people's questions.

By the way, James won't be the only who answers the questions of his listeners. On occasion, he will be inviting big name famous marketers to help answer some questions during a show.

So if you have a question about marketing or making money online, or list building, or whatever, you could potentially have a guru like Mark Joyner or Mike Filsaime answer your question. I know for a fact Mark Joyner charges $2,000 per hour for phone consultation. Imagine if he answered your single biggest question regarding creating wealth online--for free!

I think you get the idea :-)

Do you want to check it out for yourself? Go here: http://www.AskJamesPodcast.com/ask/?id=999

When you get to the site:
1) Register for free
2) Submit your question to James
3) Claim your free gift valued at $37
4) Listen and enjoy the show!

During registration, you get a chance to list your website URL if you have one. If your question is answered in a future Podcast, James may mention your website address. This could potentially get you a few visitors..... so have that URL handy when you register.

One thing I should make clear is that just because you submit your question to James doesn't mean that it WILL be answered during an episode.

Either way, you're still going to learn a lot from the questions that your fellow listeners ask. And all you have invested is a little bit of your time.
